do這個詞大家都特別熟悉，作為無處不在的助動詞，絕對是高頻詞彙了。

它還有作為實意動詞，名詞等等，所有用法加在一起，沒有幾百種也得有幾十種吧。

這篇文章來說說do的其中一種用法。

do作為動詞，可以用來表達坐牢，服刑

英語詞典裡的解釋是：

to spend time in prison

to be in a prison for （a period of time）

看幾個例句：

（in prison） for robbery。

他因搶劫罪坐了五年牢。

（可以不需要in prison，直接就可以表達此種含義）

He has been

doing time

in a federal penitentiary。

他一直在聯邦監獄服刑。

If you‘re not

如果你不小心，你最終會再次進監獄。

do的這個用法，本質的含義是：度過（一段時間）

to spend a period of time doing something

所以也可以用來表達在其它地方度過一段時間，比如說：

Oh yes， I certainly did my time in the army。

哦，是的，我當然在軍隊裡呆過。

She did a year at college， but then dropped out。

她在大學裡讀了一年，但後來輟學了。

I‘ve done my time at that terrible job， and now it’s time to move on。

我已經完成了那份糟糕的工作，現在是時候繼續前進了。

（這個時候必須表明在哪裡呆過，如果只用do，不寫清楚地方，會被預設是坐牢服刑的含義。）
