A social media post about a drifting bottle became instantly internet

famous within the entire online nautical world overnight。

The post, which was originally shared on the Chinese messaging app

WeChat, described a British couple named John and Mary, who picked up a

glass bottle while they were taking a stroll on the beach。

John and Mary were surprised to find that the glass bottle contained an

emotional letter that was kept well intact despite the miles it could have

travelled。 The letter read:

At this moment, I am at a loss of words as death is inching towards me

slowly yet inevitably。 Our ship encountered a violent storm near Bermuda,

and we are only seconds away from being engulfed by the ocean。 I will never

once again see the brightness of your eyes nor the locks of your golden

blonde hair。 Tomorrow will be St Teresa’s Day, and I will be unable to

enjoy the delicious braised mushrooms that you always cooked and prepared

from scratch。 I don’t want to die。 I had planned to ask for your hand in

marriage as soon as I returned from my voyage, but it seems that I will

never see the light of that day。 However, I believe that I will once again

taste your special braised mushrooms in heaven… That isn’t a fantasy, it

is my only reality。

I love you forever,

Pedro

Without hesitation, John and Mary departed for the British Marine

Biological Association, an organization that specializes in collecting and

studying drifting bottles and their messages。

The Marine Biological Association was founded in 1906。 At the time,

they released a drifting bottle into the ocean to research the direction of

the tides, which remained adrift on the seas for 108 years until it was

found on the shores of Amrum, Germany on April 17th, 2015。 Before that, the

oldest drifting bottle had floated on the ocean for over 99 years。

As a result of its studies in drifting bottles, the British Marine

Biological Association had gained quite a reputation。 Over the past 100

years, the association received more than 1,000 drifting bottles of various

shapes and sizes, many of which included important scientific materials,

artifacts, and letters from seafarers who perished at sea。

A century ago, communication at sea was not yet well-developed。 Sailors

who encountered storms and shipwrecks often sealed their last words and

messages to loved ones in these glass bottles and tossed them out to the

ocean。 In their final moments, these glass bottles were the sailors’ only

hope for reaching their loved ones。 Years later, they also turned out to be

valuable clues when searching for sunken ships and missing seamen。

According to an investigation of the drifting bottle that John and Mary

found, Pedro was a crewman on the cargo ship SS Uranus, which disappeared

in the Bermuda Triangle 83 years ago。

The Bermuda Triangle is situated in the western part of the North

Atlantic Ocean, and touches upon the Floridian coast in America, San Juan,

Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, the three tips forming a triangle。 Throughout the

19th century, nearly a hundred ships have disappeared in these waters along

with the death of their crew members and the loss of countless artifacts。

Thus, the Bermuda Triangle eventually came to be known as the “Devil’s

Triangle”。

Though various scientists have many theories, the definitive reason for

the catastrophes of the Bermuda Triangle remains unsolved。 Some researchers

believe that storms in the Bermuda Triangle cause a very rare infrasonic

wave。 These waves create an intense vibration that affects the amplitude of

thunderstorms and tides, bringing on extremely strenuous conditions that

are impossible for ships to escape。 Other experts theorize that these

storms are generated by the formation of warm currents off the Gulf of

Mexico。 More speculate that the eruption of underwater volcanoes in this

region makes the ocean floor sink and produce hurricanes and magnetic

storms。 Contemporary scientists now speculate that the Bermuda Triangle may

have currents that flow downwards towards the ocean floor, which creates a

whirlpool that draws ships in and pulls them underwater。

Whatever the source of these disasters may be, the Bermuda Triangle has

left a striking impression in the memory of voyagers。 Some even call it the

“grave of seafarers”。

Based on the mention of St Teresa’s Day in Pedro’s letter,

investigators deduced that Pedro was probably from Spain。 In traditional

Spanish culture, St Teresa’s Day is celebrated by a Celebration Mass and a

great feast prepared by families and friends, and especially by couples who

loved to cook together。

After learning the tragic story of the bottled message and the

mushrooms, John and Mary were moved to the point that they decided to quit

their jobs and uproot their lives in Britain to relocate to Madrid, Spain。

John began working in a restaurant as a chef, and Mary as a waitress。

They wanted to fulfill a dead sailor’s final wish。

Spain is a country with many different festivals and celebrations, and

many such holidays shine a spotlight on certain delicacies in the intricate

Spanish cuisine。 The Spanish are very proud of their food, and John’s

restaurant was full of customers day in and day out。

Spain’s landscape is adorned with gentle seaside breezes and the warm,

tender coastal sun。 Bordered by the Meditarranean Sea, Spain is gifted not

only with charming scenery but also a wide selection of seafood。 On top of

sea delicacies, Spanish braised mushrooms are a signature dish on St

Teresa’s Day。 For Spaniards, coupling various kinds of seafood specialties

with soft, fragrant mushrooms served alongside a light, palatable soup,

symbolized the sweetness and unrelenting affection between lovers。

After working and studying in Spain for over a year, John had mastered

the basics of Spanish cuisine, specifically the seemingly simple yet unique

braised mushrooms。

Then, John and Mary set out on a voyage to the Bermuda Triangle。

Today, the Bermuda Triangle isn’t exactly the horrifying “Devil’s

Triangle” that it was once known as。 Tourists stroll leisurely along the

beaches that graze the edges of the Triangle, and yachts sail comfortably

adrift its waters。 This relaxation, however, was brought about by a

maritime accident。

In 1609, the Sea Venture, led by English Admiral George Somers, was

stranded on a coral reef near the Bermuda Islands after encountering a

hurricane。 Fortunately, the survivors were able to repair the ship and

gather enough food and supplies to sail towards their destination,

Virginia。 At the time, Virginia was a British colony and was suffering from

a devastating famine。 The food that the Sea Venture brought helped to save

the local population。 Ever since then, people flocked to the Bermuda

Islands in search of new horizons。

After centuries of exploration and development, the Bermuda Islands

have become an eccentric and unparalleled tropical paradise。

The World Tourism Organization once wrote about the pastel roofed

houses scattered all over the islands, and the narrow passageways between

fields, gardens, fences, and volcanoes that led towards the highest point

of the islands, where a stone tablet stands tall and watches over the land

and waters。 Etched into the tablet are the names of all the seafarers who

once lost their lives in the seas surrounding Bermuda…

John and Mary, dressed in a suit and a wedding gown, slowly walked

towards the tablet and placed their carefully prepared braised mushrooms in

front of the tablet。

“Rest in Peace, Pedro,” they whispered。

John and Mary held each other tightly, and finally fulfilled the wish

they made all these years ago。

From then on, the fateful story of John and Mary and their connection

to a lost Spanish sailor named Pedro became a legend that touched the

hearts of all ships and mariners who navigated the waters in the Bermuda

Triangle。
